Poly endocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, PMOS
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) now begins to be known as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome or PMOS/POMS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome).
This name change has recently been proposed by an international commission of experts, with the aim of emphasizing that this condition not only affects the ovaries, but involves multiple organs, hormones and metabolic alterations.
In addition, it seeks to eliminate the misconception that "polycystic ovaries" are a mandatory finding to make the diagnosis. And the reality is that many women who live with this endocrine-metabolic disorder do NOT necessarily have multiple cysts in the ovaries.
In the past, this could cause diagnostic delays or even that many patients were ignored, simply for not presenting this specific characteristic.
In reality, this syndrome usually manifests itself with signs related to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction, such as:
Overweight and increase in visceral fat
Increase in abdominal waist diameter
Blood glucose elevation on an empty stomach or after meals
Arterial hypertension
Acanthosis nigricans (darkening of the skin of the neck and armpits)
Manifestations of excess androgens ("maculinizing hormones") may also occur, including:
Acne
Alopecia or hair loss
Hirsutism (excess hair on the face, arms or legs)
To this are added ovulatory disorders, menstrual irregularities and fertility problems, which reflects its "polyendocrine" nature.
It is important to note that this disorder seems to affect Hispanic women more frequently and is closely related to obesity, metabolic inflammation and insulin resistance.
We hope that this new nomenclature will help raise awareness in both patients and health professionals, promoting an earlier diagnosis and timely intervention.
Nutrition, physical activity, weight control and metabolic health continue to be fundamental pillars to stabilize - and even potentially reverse - many of the manifestations of this syndrome.
If you or someone you know is living with PMO ( PCOS) or suspects they might be ,you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our Metabolic Optimization Program is designed to target the root causes of the condition. By addressing insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and weight management, we can help you control—and in many cases, completely reverse—your symptoms.
